Obviously, we have all seen some of the ghastly examples of family pictures out there. Families dressed in odd costumes with strange poses are good for a laugh, but probably not what we want decorating our walls. So, consider these tips when getting ready to shoot a family picture.

There is a certain amount of planning required for a successful photo shoot, and that means you need to figure out your location and the time of day beforehand. Even if your location is indoors, you need to think about your options in terms of natural lighting and artificial lights. You might need to bring in extra lighting, so discuss your options with your family photographer prior to the shoot.

If you choose an outdoor location, discuss timing with your photographer. A professional photographer will know the best times of day to capture light that will best suit your photograph. There are many fun options for photo shoots. Consider heading to the beach or a beautiful park or perhaps a pastoral setting. Think about locations near your house that would make a beautiful backdrop for your photo.

Planning out your outfits is more important than you might think, especially in a photo that features several people. You don’t want to wear distracting items that overshadow the photo itself. For example, weird outfits or costumes or t-shirts with distracting words and images are poor choices. A better option is to dress each person in a similar style. Outfits don’t have to be exact duplicates, but they should stay within similar colors and styles. This keeps the focus on whole picture, and not just one part of it.

If the photo shoot involves children, make sure they are rested and well-fed. Try to pick a time when your children are most likely to be happy and on their best behavior. A cranky, hungry, tired child is not going to make the photo shoot a pleasant experience, so do your best to shoot at an ideal time.

Conveying a sense of happiness and closeness is an important aspect to any family portrait. So do your best to make the experience a fun event. If everyone is relaxed and happy to be together, the portrait will turn out just the way you hoped.

With the economic lull expanding its horizons across the globe, many people have ended up with loosing their jobs. And, those who are still blessedly employed do not enjoy job securities. In such times of financial crisis, more people are honing their skills and exploiting the advantages of Internet. They are turning to the widespread means of Internet to meet their monthly income or make some additional income.

And one such thriving business opted by many is selling digital photography online which gives them the opportunity of meeting their expenses at the leisure of their home. Owing to the easy accessibility and wide reach of the Internet, selling digital photography has become a potential home business prospective offering an excellent platform for experienced as well as amateur photographers to make some serious money of their art.

With the economy the way it is home based businesses, especially one based on digital photography, are one of the most viable solutions to ensuring an extra income. The great thing about selling digital photos is that there are no initial start up fees nor initial capital for investments. All you need is a digital camera, photo editing software (free trials can be downloaded), a computer and an internet connection.

Oh, yes, for this business you also need a passion for photography. You can either use photos you have already taken or take new, quality photos and then submit them to various stock photography sites. Stock photography sites are online digital photo marketers who will sell your photos to potential buyers such as web designers, product specialists, etc.

I do recommend you do some research to learn which kinds of photographs are selling and then simply try to emulate them. Once you have done your research you should have an idea of what is selling and all you need to do is take same subject and photograph it in a way that will make it stand out to potential buyers.

Though, stock photography sites are open for all and sundry, if you get started by uploading casual and random photographs, chances of your getting lost and ignored in the crowd of abundance are quite probable. However, if you have a prior knowledge on the rules of photography, you can grab the chances of making maximum money.

Learn the kind of pictures that are best appreciated, the best marketing and stock photography sites to upload them, the kind of online consumers visiting them and then pave your self the right way to go ahead of the crowd.

Once you get the hang of the stock photography, you can gradually convert your start-up small scale business into large scale business by fetching as much as 10,000 $ to 50,000 $ or even more per month. With the advantages of the globally widespread Internet, you can easily subject your pictures to a marketplace that has no borders or restrictions. You can put your best work at sale to both national and international online consumers.

Contemplating of selling digital photographs online as a prospective business saves you from the pain of meeting unwanted traffic chores daily by giving you the ease of your own space.

Is photography your hobby or passion? In either case you can easily start minting money if you pursue this passion. All you really require is a digital camera, access to good software programs on your computer and Internet. Mentioned here are a few ways on how to make money through an online photography business.

Due to the popularity of the Internet we now have a global marketplace where you can find anything you want, including photos. Stock photography sites provide photos to consumers such as web designers, product marketers, newsletter creators, etc. It is through these stock photography sites where you could earn an incredible income simply by uploading your photos and waiting for these consumers to purchase them. Even simple, basic photos of flowers can attract customers.

It is significant that you decide on a theme for clicking photographs. For a photograph to sell, it should be appealing to the customer. So your perception should be worthy as an illustration and should benefit the customer. Basically people are looking for crystal ideas or illustrations that cater to their company’s image. For example a lady with red lipstick in one hand and a cherry in other will sell more than a baboon jumping trees. Basically real people photographs sell more. If possible take photographs of models. This will not only generate interest in you, it will attract lots of buyers, and your online photography business will begin to flourish.

Worried you can’t produce quality photos? Taking pictures as a hobby is different than trying to market them to professionals. It is best to do some research on what qualifies as a “quality” photo, i.e. lack of noise, clarity, etc., before submitting your photos to the stock photography sites. Online you can find a variety of tutorial e-books that can guide you through this process. turnyourphotosintocash.com is one of the best books that I have found. It has clear instructions on how you can actually start getting great results in digital photography by following a few guidelines.

Photo editing software is important in order to enhance and edit your photos. You can download a trial version of Adobe Elements if you currently don’t have a program and a great site for learning this program is at learnelementsnow.com. There are great tutorials and tricks to make the most of your digital photos. The site creator, David Peters, also has an e-book which gives you step-by-step instructions on how to master your skills in Adobe Photoshop Elements in just 2 hours!

Submitting your photos is the next step, once your research has been accomplished and you have taken some quality photos. While each site has its own guidelines for submission you will find that most want the photos submitted in the .jpg format. Quality is key so you will want to make sure your photos are crystal clear with no grain or noise. Copyright infringement standards are strictly adhered to so you want to make sure you don’t include name brands or labels in your photos as these will automatically be rejected. If you do have a photo with a label or brand name on it don’t worry, you can use photo editing software to remove these items as well as fix lighting and quality problems.

One of the most important parameter that people often overlook is indexing the photograph. Try to name the photo by including appropriate keywords. For this you have to conduct good research. You can even use synonymous words in case your competitor has used a similar word for his photograph. Try looking for these words online or in dictionary. For example, for bar you can use alcohol, wine, whiskey, glass etc. If all goes well, you can get paid up to $100 for just about 200 photos, so get out your calculator now and just work out what that could mean to your online photography business.

Its a good idea to subscribe to more than one stock photography site and there are many to choose from. Getting your photos sold is the key so by submitting them to a variety of agencies increases your chance to earn a higher income.

In difficult times your camera-time is most likely going to be as limited as your cashflow, making it just as valuable. So you really need to make sure you only spend it shooting material with real commercial prospects.

In difficult times your camera-time is most likely going to be as limited as your cashflow, making it just as valuable. So you really need to make sure you only spend it shooting material with real commercial prospects.

This means putting in the study time ahead so that every time you’re faced with a photograph op, you're fully clear on what your likely markets are for the subject matter, who a couple of your prospective purchasers might be, and what sort of photographs they'll need.

Aimlessly shooting everything and anything for stock hasn't worked for ages and in tricky times it's a waste of time and effort. Miles better to treat every shoot as a mini-assignment with an end-user under consideration and a clear notion of what pictures you want to get.

In reality the top photographers will take it a step farther and make an exhaustive shot list before they even start.

This discipline continues at the editing stage. Consider a two-stage workflow where stage one applies basic processing and backups to each new photograph set. Then stage two is applied selectively, only to those photographs with real commercial prospects.

Instead of spending hours uploading every image from each shoot to your stock catalog, apply the 80-20 rule and select only those photos that sell. Get them published ASAP and then get out and shoot more pictures.

If a purchaser is interested in the subject but not 100% happy with the selection, they will usually check to see if you have any more… And you can dig them out & process them then.

It's usually possible to publish additional photographs later but for now target your efforts on those photographs most liable to make you cash!

You can put this way of approaching work straight way. Write down a list of the 10 subjects that you will shoot in the next few months and do some basic consumer analysis for each.

Write each subject on a fresh page, and then make some notes on all the possible buyers for that subject? What industry are they in? What services or goods do they supply? How can they use the images? Who are their clients? What kind of message does your customer need to convey to their customers?

Attempt to list one or two specific examples of real enterprises that would use pictures of that subject, and then jump online and check their web site to see what kind of pictures they already use. Make notes on mood, style, lighting and composition. If they use models, make notes on ages, gender, ethnicality, garments and facial expressions.

The idea is next time you are shooting these subjects, you'll have so many particular concepts of the shots you would like, you'll not only take more marketable images, you'll get a whole lot more of them as well!

Matt’s recently started publishing with kindle using the Kindle Publisher Pro package. The Kindle Publisher Pro package is a complete package designed to show you how to publish kindle books in a weekend.

The 80-20 rule applies to many aspects of photography but maybe the most important is where you pass the time and where you make your cash.

The 80-20 rule applies to many aspects of photography but maybe the most important is where you pass the time and where you make your cash.

For most of us it likely looks something like this: 80% of your time is spent on activities that produce 20% of your revenue, or less. Paperwork, busy-work, interruptions and distractions…

Which basically means is only 20% of your time is spent on the activities that actually generate almost all of your earnings.

Does that seem familiar?
In tough times the very first thing to do is to check both your time management and get fully clear on what tasks generate revenue. After you identify where you spend your time, and which activities generate the majority of your income, probabilities are there will be really tiny overlap!

After that it is a matter of reducing the time you spend on tasks that don’t generate cashflow and using it instead to do more of the things which do generate cashflow.

Reducing time expended checking e-mail 10 times a day, checking your photo website statistics, aimless web surfing. You may then use that time for real market analysis, prospecting for new photograph purchasers and shooting new images!

That is what’s going to grow your business: shooting new stills and showing them to Clients. Everything else should be kept small.

A couple of things you can do right now:-
Set Your E-mail To Test Only Twice A Day. Set the 1st check at 12 midday, so you have the morning free to get things done uninterrupted. Set the second check for later in the afternoon so that you can check for replies. Turn off sounds & alerts so you do not get interrupted if you are in the middle of something.

Set Up An Auto-responder Message on your e-mail account to tell people you will be checking and responding at these times and include a cellphone number if it is important. You’ll be amazed how few calls you will get! Most people will wait quite happily when they know when to expect an answer!

Therefore you have made the decision to create some cash out of your footage then sell them as stock photos? Your assortment of stock footage can be quite good. I’m not sure your collections, but there’s a large difference between taking good or great photographs and photographs which sell.

You can observe great pictures in photograph mags and displays, which people admire, however these pictures don’t make you much cash. Footage, which boost your profits so known as stock photos, won't be great, however these satisfy the necessity of the client. For example photos on packaging, in books, booklets, selling material etc.

When you will have a picture, you have got to think not in composition from the picture itself, however in terms that area of the picture will contain the written text, chit or some place of other picture.

Avoid delivering stock photos libraries that offer royalty free footage or inexpensive photographs. Should you select, this may take you tiny earnings and also you lose your copyright to those pictures. You will find a number of other significant stock photos shoppers, who’ll buy your photos with once publication and will also be prepared to pay much larger cost for the photographs. Don’t auction yourself inexpensive. You're able to offer cheaper costs round the beginning nonetheless you can lift up your costs later on when stock photography purchasers know you more.

Just Remember, likely the most stock libraries have a large cut from the cost of every image offered. They are managing a company to make money from photography enthusiasts. This actually is ok, because these photography enthusiasts have a very good deal. Before delivering your stock photos to the stock photograph library, read all the facts. Choose only individuals stock photos libraries, which provide you with acceptable deal and %.

It appears everyone on the planet must own a camera by this point. Given the recurring financial crises of the last couple of years, it is not surprising that more camera owners are interested in selling photography online for some additional cash.

For pro photographers attempting to make a living selling photography online all this extra competition from the hobbyists has made life pretty difficult. Masses of sites have appeared offering photographers the facility to give their work away for nothing more than small change and the excitement of making a sale. The market has been deluged by cheap pictures and many photography buyers have come to view microstock photography as just another commodity to be sourced at the lowest possible cost.

It’s not all bad news though. In a lot of ways we’ve now come the full circle, and an increasing number of photo buyers are showing a renewed interest in features apart from price alone. For the savvy photographer, this offers a means to stick out from the crowd and define a niche of their own.

Specialized Content:

There’s such a thing as too much choice, and professional photography buyers have had enough of the massive stock libraries with millions of images. Plenty of the photography buyers we speak to are continually looking for new collections that target their interests, and will cheerfully search 4-5 specialist libraries rather than one mega collection.

Most microstock photography articles will tell you to start by applying to the 4-5 largest stock libraries for the maximum exposure but that is only half of the story. Those sites might get the most exposure, but that doesn’t always mean you will get a share of it.

Instead of joining millions of other photographers at the ‘big-four ‘ stock libraries, you’ll do miles better to find 3-4 boutique stock libraries that you can submit to. Pick one photography stock agency as your principal net presence and use the others to re-post your content (photographic and written) and add substance to your net footprint.

Original Content:

If you look around, you will find a heap of ‘experts ‘ who’ll tell you the fastest way to make money with microstock is to look at the pictures that sell best on the major libraries, and copy them. It’s fairly likely this could work for a while, but you only need to see the mass of poor photos of popular subjects to understand why photography buyers are tired of it.

Much better that you adopt a Client-centric approach and think about your end user, who they are and what they need the stock images for so that you can then set about creating photographs they can use.

The best thing about this approach is, you can still check the major libraries to see what’s selling, but then, instead of simply duplicating what you see, you can identify the themes and concepts that the buyers need associated with the subjects, and from there create something fresh and new that you know your buyers will need..

Personal Service:

In an industry where the buyers were always racing to meet impossible deadlines, immediate downloads must have looked a God-send for some time.

As one of the few stock photography libraries that did not offer instant downloads, we definitely felt the pressure when we started. We soon realized though the photo buyer’s top priority was to ‘find the image ‘ and as long as a reliable delivery followed, ‘instant ‘ was not really a problem.

In reality, photography buyers are creative people who enjoy interacting with other creative people. These days we are still finding plenty of top-end photography buyers who are happy to take a little more time and experience the ‘photo research ‘ journey, dealing directly with the photographers, so long as it’s pro and efficient.

So however and wherever you choose to sell stock photographs, ensure you make yourself available to photography buyers. They’ll appreciate it and once the link is created, they will come back to you time and time again.

Value Your Work & Your Time

When you approach stock photography on this principle, you’re actually positioning yourself as a high-end photographer, which helps you stand out from the crowd even further.

Without going into the whole rights-managed vs royalty-free discussion, there are many millions of photographers on the web these days queuing up to give their work away for peanuts, so it you follow the group you’ll be facing enormous competition for the smallest of returns.

By comparison, the rights-managed market is a lot less competitive and pays considerably more, so if you’ve got the prime quality , original content, then it makes complete sense to cut out your own niche there instead. Specialist photographers have always prospered and in the existing market place it’s more crucial than ever that you focus on doing a couple of things remarkably well to sell photography online.

When you specialize your work interests, you narrow your market and you are able to really get to know your buyers. This in turn lets you understand their desires and create the top quality original images that may make you stick out from the crowd. And if you then back each sales lead with outstanding personal service, you will soon build a Customer list that may come to depend on you as a creative partner they’d like to conduct business with.

In today’s uncertain economic times everyone is looking for ways to earn extra income and if you are a photography enthusiast stock photography is a viable option to earning extra cash. Becoming involved in stock photography puts your photos out into the global marketplace where they can be seen and purchased by a wide variety of consumers. Undoubtedly this field can be incredibly lucrative; however, there is also a high potential to fail. Many people who jump into this business do so with their eyes closed and never understand why their photos were rejected at the outset. Understanding what the pitfalls are give you the opportunity to avoid them and become successful. If you want to try out this growing field here are some tips on how you can become successful.

The first factor for success is quality. Stock photography sites only accept photos of the highest quality so to avoid rejection off the bat you need to only submit photos that are crystal clear. The key to superior quality, apart from your talent, is a high quality camera. Using a minimum of 5 mega pixels set to maximum resolution should give you the quality you need to have your photos accepted. The key to making money in this business requires that your photos be accepted so that potential clients can actually purchase them and to make this happen you need to set your photos apart from the rest.

Another way people get rejected is by submitting, or uploading, their entire portfolio at one time. Most don’t know that the higher the number of photos that you submit at one time, the higher your chances of having them thrown by the photo selector; this calls for absolute rejection! When starting out I recommend that you pick no more than three of your best photographs for submission. Once these have been approved and if you are extremely confident in the quality of your work you can try to send a larger batch; however, always remember the potential for absolute rejection. One further factor for rejection is submitting duplicates of your work. This is a common problem due to changing file names. So, to avoid this problem, don’t rename your photos until have you have uploaded them. Once this is done you can rename them, using appropriate keywords to help consumers find your photos.

Appeal is another factor for success. It’s tempting to use photo editing software programs to accentuate the photos appeal and refine its quality. What you may be unaware of is that each time you open and edit a photo you are reducing overall quality. Your best bet, take a quality photo from the outset. If you must alter it remember that each time you save your photo you are reducing its quality. Several free photo editing programs reduce quality more than average so it is recommended that you use a program such as Photoshop which will minimize damage.

Keywords are important. To get your photos noticed you want to sure potential buyers can find them and here is where keywords come into play. Visibility is vital and ideally you want your image to appear in a keyword search within the first two pages. By showing up early in the you are increasing your opportunity for sales. On the flip side using too many keywords risks photo rejection as it can be considered spam. Therefore, I recommend you use a maximum of 10 keywords to make it visible.

Quality photos, correct keywords and a creative take on an ordinary item are how you can avoid your digital photograph from being rejected. Following these tips will not only help you succeed in this field but outshine your competitors.

Thinking it time you started selling your pictures as stock photography? Stock photography is big and everyone seems to be doing it, sadly though, the majority are going about it the wrong way.

Thinking it’s time you started selling your pictures as microstock photography? Microstock photography is big and everyone seems to be doing it, sadly though, the majority are going about it the wrong way.

The very first thing you must do is decide where you want to end up …

Are you wanting a full-time business? Do you dream about throwing in the day job and becoming a full-time photographer? Or do you just want a little extra cash from your hobby? Perhaps you’d be content to get a new lens once a year from your profits?

If you would like the former, you’re looking at joining a competitive business and that’s going to take significant time, effort and you’re going to have to invest real money to make it happen.

For stock photography you want to assess every element of your photography the standard of your work, the commercial potential of the subjects you shoot, how many images you have on file and how often you add to them. Quality, Content & Volume to achieve success in microstock photography you need to have each of those aspects totally covered.

If you feel you could have work to do in any of those areas, I’d recommend you take some time to work on them first. Take a short course to fine-tune your technique, buy some microstock photography books to find more subjects that sell well, and then shoot like mad to build up your catalog.

Stock is competitive and certain to suck the joy right from your photography if you try and start selling your photos before you are ready.

If you’re not out for a major life-change though, you have a few more options.

A lot of part-time photographers place their pictures with the Microstock photography sites and hope to make a little bit of small change each year but I truly believe this is about the very worst of your choices.
